The Greenhouse History |

The home remained in Hanes ownership until Virginia Oakes – daughter of Mrs. A.B. Edith (Hanes) Smith, a daughter of Carlton Hanes, sold it to Abb Dickson.
Mr. Dickson slowly began to restore the home and gardens , aided by a gift of the 1920 plans. The downstairs is now fully restored, and is used for various functions.
The upstairs bedrooms of the house are each furnished with actual antiques and props from Gone With The Wind. |

In the mid – 1800’s Professor George C. Looney had come to Jonesboro to re-establish local schools after the war. Here he met Mr. Elisha Hanes, a local businessman. Together, they built several public school buildings and a College in Jonesboro. In 1879 Mr. Looney had this ten room dwelling built to house not only his family, but also board students and teachers from surrounding territory.
For some reason– probably a better offer elsewhere, Professor Looney sold the house. It passed through several hands for about 15 years. Then in 1898, Mr. J. Carlton Hanes bought it. |
|
In 1924, Mr. Hanes made many interior and exterior changes. The narrow downstairs front porch was replaced by a wide porch with large columns. The staircase, which ascended from the front hall, was moved to the back hall and rises to a platform and a turn that makes it impossible to move large pieces of furniture from one floor to another. The railings on the upstairs porch were removed so that furniture could be brought in upstairs. |
